A Tasty Guide to Different Types of Ice Cream

September 15, 2025

From creamy gelato to tangy frozen yogurt and refreshing sorbet, the world of ice cream is full of variety. Here’s a closer look at the most popular types of ice cream, what makes each one unique, and where Anita Gelato fits in.

Ice cream isn’t just one dessert – it’s a whole family of frozen treats with different textures, flavors, and traditions. At Anita Gelato, we celebrate that variety while putting our own spin on it: 150+ rotating flavors, churned in-store, and made with high-quality ingredients. Let’s take a tasty tour of the classics.

Classic Ice  Cream

The version most Americans grew up with. Traditional ice cream must contain at least 10% milkfat, plus sugar and air churned in to create a smooth, creamy texture. Served colder than gelato, it holds its shape well but can sometimes mask subtle flavors.

Gelato

Gelato is Italy’s answer to ice cream – and our specialty at Anita. Made with less fat and churned at a slower speed, it’s denser, silkier, and served slightly warmer than classic ice cream. That means every scoop packs more intense flavor, whether it’s pistachio, chocolate hazelnut, or mango sorbetto.

Frozen Yogurt

Frozen yogurt, or fro-yo, adds a tangy kick to the frozen dessert lineup. Made with cultured milk, it’s known for its tart edge and smooth texture. At Anita, you’ll find soft-serve frozen yogurt gelato styles that blend creaminess with a refreshing bite. Perfect for when you want something light but still indulgent.

Soft Serve

Soft serve gets its airy texture from higher air content and a warmer serving temperature. It’s light, fluffy, and often twirled into a cone. While Anita is best known for gelato, our soft-serve frozen yogurt gelato brings that same swirl effect with a richer base and bold toppings.

Sorbet & Sherbet

  • Sorbet is dairy-free, made from fruit, sugar, and water. At Anita, our sorbets range from 0% fat fruit-based options to coconut milk blends for extra body.

  • Sherbet sits between sorbet and ice cream, with a small amount of dairy added. It’s tangy, smooth, and refreshing – though less common on our menu, we lean heavily into sorbets for a vegan-friendly experience.

Other Unique Styles

Around the world, frozen desserts take on many forms: India’s kulfi, Thailand’s rolled ice cream, Japan’s mochi ice cream. While Anita sticks to gelato, sorbet, and frozen yogurt gelato, we draw inspiration from these traditions to keep our flavor list creative and surprising.

At Anita Gelato, the variety doesn’t end with the style – our 150+ flavors rotate constantly, making every visit a new adventure. From creamy chocolate hazelnut to tangy passionfruit sorbet, every scoop is churned in-store for texture you can taste.

WHAT’S
NEW?

Some desserts are just there for the moment. You enjoy them, and that’s that. Others linger a bit, and you find yourself thinking about them later. That’s where Anita Gelato fits in. It started small, in a family kitchen. Mama Anita and her son Nir making frozen treats, figuring things out as they went. People noticed. And then they kept coming back for more. More than 20 years later, that same spirit still shows up in every colorful tray, generous topping, and the first bite that makes you pause for a second.

Every scoop starts ahead of the game at Anita. The gelato is crafted by hand, churned fresh in-store, and offered in a dazzling rotation of over 150 flavors. Then come the toppings, turning each perfect scoop into a celebration. Suddenly, your gelato is not just creamy or cold, but it also crackles, sparkles, and shows off a personality all of its own. 🍦

You know that moment when your gelato arrives and you pause for a second before eating it? Not on purpose, just… it looks too good to eat! The scoop holds its shape well and the ridges are soft but defined, and the color feels almost too clean to be real. Someone at the table says “wait, don’t touch it yet,” and suddenly phones are out. That’s really all this is. Catching that moment before it melts into something else.
